Good Trouble Memorial Wall
Project type
Mural
Date
2023
Location
Valdosta, GA
Size
16 x 130
This 16 x 130 mural pays homage to various civil rights leaders. With the help of my former student, A’Shadrian Clayton, we designed and painted this mural. Valdosta is located on the border of Florida and we viewed this mural through the lens of a protest to what is happening there. Stripping of civil rights for LGBTQ and the removal of history books.
In it you’ll find images of John Lewis, Marsha P Johnson, Howard Thurman, MLK, Malcolm X, Ahmaud Arbery, Mary Turner, Saint Anna Alexander, Maya Angelou, Harriet Tubman, and various local helpers who are no longer with us.
This also pays tribute to Mary Turner who was a lynching victim of the Lynching Rampage of 1918. There are no such monuments in Valdosta to these victims but still stands a Confederate monument at the courthouse. We want to share history, good and bad. We must not repeat. We must look for the helpers and become helpers ourselves.
